I've seen the surf movies and watched surfers from afar and it just looks kind of difficult to me and it seems like a sport for super fit and young people. So I was a bit nervous when Eric, the boys and I had our first surf lessons - beginners class! Eric and I had our lessons first and they loaned us these cool surf tops with logos "life is better with surfing".. we felt a bit goofy with them.. but secretly hoped they made us look cool. Eric and I were conscious of being 40 somethings, somewhat out of shape and with our somewhat pale northern skin contrasted with the lean, dark skinned surfers that were out there looking pretty cool. We don't have pictures of us..which is probably a good thing ( I prefer the image in my head where I was looking sort of cool for a 43 year old Mom). It was fun and I was really surprised and excited to know that I were actually able to get up on the board and surf! (the waves were nice and gentle.. beginner waves and the boards nice and big). The really fun part was watching the boys have their lessons and seeing them get on the board and paddle and do all the stuff surfers do. It ranked right up there with seeing them rock climb in Squamish. So, after our lessons, the boys had theirs and we transformed from surfer wantabees to the adoring parents who didn't stop taking pictures of their little guys. It was a fun afternoon for sure!!!
Part of the deal with Patos Surf School is that we get the use of their boards for a week.. so this blog might be a "to be continued".
